Derrick, mostly known as Tailor Marique, is a prominent figure in Ghana’s fashion scene, blending traditional and modern styles as a designer, entrepreneur, influencer, and creative freelancer.
Holding a degree in Fine Art from KNUST College of Art, Marique has a diverse professional background spanning public relations, digital and social media marketing, events, and app development. He has also honed skills as a freelancer in various creative fields, including photography, graphic design, and production direction.
Growing up immersed in Ghana’s culture and prints, his creative spirit naturally gravitated toward design, leading him to discover a deep passion for tailoring.
After over a decade of navigating the fashion industry, Marique finally found his true calling. What began as a university hobby evolved into a full-fledged passion project, with Marique officially launching his brand in 2018.
After gaining valuable experience at a public relations and events firm—which helped him discover more about his creative potential—Marique bounced back from a devastating shop fire, thanks to overwhelming support from the fashion community. This experience proved the power of unity, resilience, and belief in his creative vision.
Embracing his Ghanaian heritage, Marique set out to blend traditional aesthetics with modern styles, creating garments that he felt were missing in the market. He noticed a lack of design innovation in the use of African prints and wanted to offer a fresh, contemporary take.
Fueled by a desire to break free from the constraints of a niche market, reclaim his artistic freedom, and build a team beyond a one-person operation, Marique’s vision materialized through his brand, dotMARIQ, which showcases his unique approach to fashion.
As the lead designer, he has developed a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship and innovative designs that honour Ghanaian traditions. His collections often feature dynamic fabrics, elaborate patterns, and silhouettes that celebrate the richness of African culture.
dotMARIQ is now a partnership of two people with immense creative and management experience. The brand has been reoriented to explore a blend of resort, casual, and urban styles, merging contemporary creativity with traditional cultural ideas.
GAMUT marks a milestone for dotMARIQ as its debut collection, offering a sneak peek into the brand’s future aesthetic. This inaugural collection features 12 distinctive looks, showcasing a diverse range of men’s garments. Marique’s goal was to craft a cohesive body of work that would resonate with every man, ensuring at least one look aligns with each personal style. Building on the foundation laid by GAMUT, dotMARIQ plans to release three additional collections throughout the year, each delving into specific themes and expanding on select pieces from the debut collection.
Beyond his label, Marique has established himself as a versatile creative designer, collaborating on various projects that span fashion and art.
His dedication to his craft has not gone unnoticed. He has been featured in various media outlets, including a notable interview with Pulse Ghana, where he discussed his design philosophy and the evolution of his brand.
“I feel alive again with this rebrand and new collection. With the vision we have on our board, I say nothing less than top-level quality and creativity should be expected from dotMARIQ,” reflects Tailor Marique.
Tailor Marique’s designs are narratives that convey the beauty and complexity of Ghanaian identity. Through his artistry, he invites individuals to experience fashion that is deeply rooted in tradition yet boldly contemporary.
Marique’s determination inspires others as he brings Ghanaian fashion to the world stage. Through his brand, dotMARIQ, he continues to innovate African style and showcase the power of art to unite and inspire.
