Pearl Esi Ahlijah: How Necessity Forced Her To Embrace Creativity

Pearl Esi Ahlijah has always loved art, comics, movies and music, but for a long time, she was simply a fan of these art forms.

It wasn’t something she imagined turning into a career. Then life got real. Bills needed paying, and adulthood came knocking.

“Well, I was hungry…” she says, recalling the moment necessity pushed her to lean into something she had always been good at, writing.

What started out as a practical way to get by slowly became something more. Without fully realising it, she was stepping into a space where creativity would become her calling.

Before joining EchoHouse, Pearl studied English and History, followed by a Master’s in Public Relations. She spent some time as a copywriter at another agency, learning how to sharpen her words and tell stories that stick.

When she came to Echo, she found something different, a place where she did not have to stay in one box. She could explore, stretch, and experiment. And she did.

What started as writing punchy headlines and smart taglines eventually turned into leading campaigns and shaping big ideas. Today, she is a Senior Creative Lead, but to her, that title is just a reflection of how far her thinking has grown.

“As a writer, my job used to be making the words sound good,” she says. “Now, I’m thinking about the whole experience, how everything comes together to say something meaningful.”

Her writing gives her an edge when it comes to pitching ideas. It is one thing to say something is a good concept and another to make people feel it. And that is precisely what she has learnt to do well.

When it comes to the creative process, Pearl does not stick to a strict formula. It’s more like organised chaos, a few scribbles here, some inspiration scrolling there, and a bit of daydreaming until something clicks. She listens closely, pays attention to the little details, and lets those moments birth big ideas.

Funny enough, she actually likes routine. Not because it is boring, but because it pushes her to find new ways to say old things. That is where the challenge and the fun are for her.

While writing is her foundation, Pearl enjoys how being a creative opens her up to explore other forms of artistic expression. From visual ideas to campaign direction, she is no longer just thinking like a writer but like a full creative.

She credits Echo for giving her that space to grow. Whether it’s learning on the job, getting support from teammates, or simply being trusted to take the lead, it’s been a space where she could shape her own path.

Pearl may have started this journey out of necessity, but she stayed because she found her voice and a place where that voice could grow. EchoHouse has become where she gets to stretch her creativity, lead with intention, and keep learning along the way.

Beyond writing, Pearl is building stories, shaping ideas, and answering marketing briefs with solutions people actually feel.

And in many ways, she is only getting started.
